Penn State Schreyer Honors College
SHO TIME

2009 Summer Reading Program

Welcome

Welcome to the 11th Annual Summer Reading Program offered by the Schreyer Honors College. Each year a literary committee of Schreyer Scholars reviews nominations of books, discusses the top selections, and recommends a slate of books for selection. During orientation in August, SHO TIME mentors moderate small group book discussions of the selected titles.

Purpose

The purpose of the program is twofold:

  • to encourage you to read and discuss issues that contribute to broad intellectual development, and
  • to foster intellectual ties through discussion with faculty members, other students, and SHC staff.

The selections are intended to appeal to diverse interests. With this opportunity, we encourage you to read outside your realm of knowledge.

Book Selections

This year’s book selections include both fiction and nonfiction that incorporate different views of society, culture, and ethics.

  • Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
  • The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

All incoming Scholars are expected to read one of these three books.
