This Saturday, Schreyer Honors College Scholars will be veering from their usual weekend routine of going to brunch with friends, catching up on sleep, and doing schoolwork.
Instead, students will be sorting canned goods and entertaining senior citizens during the first annual Schreyer Honors College Day of Service. Throughout the morning, students will be assigned to various service sites on and off campus. Scheduled work sites include a local food bank and the State College Area Meals on Wheels program.
In the afternoon, students will participate in a game of Family Feud being staged before an audience of local senior citizens. Residents of Simmons and Atherton will be competing against each other. Schreyer Honors College Dean Chris Brady will join the team that raises the most money before the game. The event's proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of the State College Area.
Anna Han, student co-chair of the Day of Service, said the event is a good way for Scholars to demonstrate the Honors College's mission of engaging Scholars in service and civic engagement.
“The Day of Service is a great way for Scholars to get involved in the community and to break out of their normal student-mode for a couple of hours,” Han said.
Schreyer Scholars wishing to register for the event can do so at www.volunteer.psu.edu.
