Career Services: Resources for Undergraduate Research
Office of Undergraduate Education Research Opportunities
This Penn State page contains links to research opportunities in various departments at the different Penn State campuses. Research opportunities are also searchable by supervising faculty name.
Medical/Science Research Programs
Rochester Institute of Technology Pre-med Program: This is probably the best-maintained, most frequently updated site for these sci-bio-research opportunities I’ve ever seen. It is frighteningly thorough and should be your first stop when looking for these particular opportunities
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of approximately ten undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution.
National Science Foundation Research (http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu)
Students can search for an REU site by research area keywords. The following are just a few of hundreds of REU sites.
- National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO)
- National Weather Center (NWC)
- American Mathematical Society (AMS)
Undergraduate Discovery Summer Grants
The Office of Undergraduate Education has created the Undergraduate Discovery Summer Grants program to help students take advantage of Penn State's research environment. The purpose of these grants is to promote faculty/undergraduate collaboration as students engage in original research, scholarship, and creative work during the summer under the direct supervision of a faculty member.
Conference Travel Support
Penn State undergraduates who are presenting the results of their research or creative work at national or regional professional conferences may request financial support to defray the costs of attending the conference.
Phi Beta Kappa Research Grants
Apply for a $500 research grant to support your honors thesis work.
Phi Beta Kappa Honors Thesis Prize
Apply for a $1,500 prize to be awarded to a meritorious research project completed in an eligible field by a Schreyer Scholar as his or her honors thesis.
