The Schreyer Honors College is open to exceptional Penn State students through the Gateway application process. Penn State undergraduates may apply to the SHC after completing at least one but no more than four semesters. Unfortunately, Gateway Scholars do not receive the Academic Excellence Scholarship provided to those admitted as incoming freshmen.
The Gateway Scholars Program Scholarship was created by Tom Sharbaugh ’73 Bus and his wife, Kristin Hayes, to provide funds to first-generation college students who have entered the Schreyer Honors College through the Gateway program. Specifically, the scholarship program would provide $5,000 grants to students who have demonstrated true grit and determination during their path to Penn State and the Schreyer Honors College.
“Schreyer did not admit many of these students on their first try, but they were resilient, did exceptionally well in their courses and won admission on the second try. These kids are going to succeed in life.”- Tom Sharbaugh
Tom and Kristin have already donated $50,000 to start this scholarship program. In addition, as part of this generous gift to the University, Tom and Kristin are challenging other alumni and friends to make contributions to the program. Until June 30, 2014, they will match gifts given to the program 4:1. For every dollar raised up to $25,000, they will contribute four more dollars toward scholarships for first generation Gateway Scholars with financial need. A combined total support for the scholarship program at $175,000 would provide 35 Gateway scholarships over several years. You can make a difference in the lives of committed Schreyer Scholars today!
