DHFP: Are You a Jo or an Amy? Burkean Identification in the Musical Adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women

  • Monday, October 10, 2022
  • 6:00 PM- 8:30 PM
  • C-9 Atherton hall
Join Dr. Valerie Schrader as we watch a recording of the London production of the musical “Little Women,” based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel. We will discuss what Burkean identification is, how it is created throughout the musical, and how identifying with one or more of the characters may lead to persuasion regarding messages associated with those characters. We will also explore the differences between the musical and the original novel, as well as how performance choices, including directorial and acting decisions, and mise-en-scene elements like sets, costumes, and props contribute to the messages in the musical. The musical’s strengths and shortcomings will be discussed. No prior knowledge of the musical or communication theory is required to participate in this event. Dinner will be provided.

It’s through Schreyer that I found my business fraternity. I’ve found so many different people who have been great friends, but who have also helped me network professionally.
