A Statement from Dean Peggy A. Johnson

Schreyer Honors College Dean Peggy A. Johnson

Like so many of you, my heart is heavy watching and learning of despicable acts of brutality and racism around the nation. The physical attacks, the hate speech, and the injustice are morally reprehensible and unacceptable and must be countered not simply with words, but deeds – actions that condemn racism. It has no place in our society.

I have heard members of the Penn State community, OUR community, expressing their fear and their need for constant vigilance, not just for their own personal safety, but for the safety of their children. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine having to live with this fear.

We must work together to create an inclusive environment where all are welcome and supported. Where the lives of others have meaning and value, and the safety and security of everyone is a priority. The Schreyer Honors College at Penn State is committed to this cause. It is in the ethos of who we are, what we stand for, and what we stand against. Together, we must challenge and eradicate racism and discrimination.

And we must listen. We must listen to learn.

President Barron recently stated that, “We must make hate speech and racism ugly again. We can only do that when the voice of Penn State and others is so loud that it is clear that the voices of racism among us are not supported, not part of We Are, and are neither normal nor accepted.”

The Schreyer Honors College adds its voice to that call. I hope you will, too.
