Schreyer Honors College (SHC)at Penn State

Parents Council

The Schreyer Parents Council (SPC) plays a critical role in the advancement of the Schreyer Honors College mission. The Council recognizes that parents can play a key part in supporting all Scholars, not just their own children, through their involvement with the College. The Council was created in 2013 to support three key pillars of the Honors College — Career Services, Development and Recruitment.

Pillar 1: Career Services

Membership responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Providing or helping with networking to provide career development opportunities through internships, job listings and career mentoring
  • Supporting efforts to encourage the recruitment of Scholars by various top-tier graduate schools, employers, and entrepreneurs
  • Helping bolster the College's alumni, parents, and friends network by joining the College's group on LinkedIn

Pillar 2: Development

Membership responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Financially supporting the College's mission by making a meaningful gift to the Schreyer Future Fund
  • Assisting the College's development staff with personal follow-ups to the annual parent solicitation and encouraging other parents to join in supporting the College
  • Supporting the development staff by attending or helping to arrange meetings with prospective parent supporters

Pillar 3: Outreach

Membership responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Coordinating the development of the Parents Newsletter, distributed to all parents of Schreyer Scholars twice each academic year.
  • Supporting outreach efforts by the college: admissions interview sessions and yield events, new student orientation, summer sendoffs, SHO TIME, football fan fest
  • Promoting communication to all parents of Schreyer Scholars via website and social networking
