What is the Thesis?

Your thesis is the culmination of your undergraduate experience in Schreyer, drawing on the skills and knowledge you’ve acquired. It can take many forms, but the common thread is that it provides you with the opportunity to deeply explore a subject or problem that interests you under the mentorship of a faculty member.

Your thesis, which is published through the Penn State Libraries electronic database, becomes your personal contribution to scholarship in your field.

Types of Projects

Depending on your major and areas of interest, the thesis project varies widely. Possible projects include:

    • A lab-based research experiment

    • A creative project like a screenplay or musical composition

    • A critical or historical analysis of a text or movement

    • A policy exploration with real-world implications

The thesis will consist of a written document, but the length and level of detail will vary based on discipline. Some Scholars may have accompanying submissions, such as a film or an art piece. You can search the library's honors thesis database for examples of past thesis projects in your area of interest.

    Thesis Timeline

The thesis timeline varies by discipline and individual student. Generally, Scholars write their thesis in their final year; however, we have milestones along the way to keep you on track. Below is an overview.

Note: This timeline assumes a four-year graduation path. If you entered Schreyer as a second- or third-year student, your exploration and planning stages would be condensed. Please reference the Academic Deadlines page for more specific guidance.
