Graduating as a Schreyer Scholar

The honors journey looks different for every Scholar depending on your Schreyer entry path, your academic major, and your future goals. However, there are key requirements that every Scholar must complete to graduate with honors.

These honors requirements are completed alongside your academic major requirements. You should work closely with your honors adviser to plan how you will meet these expectations to reach your academic goals.

Requirements for all Scholars

  • Complete the required number of honors credits

  • Maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of at least 3.4

  • Submit an approved honors thesis, meeting all thesis requirements and deadlines

The Schreyer Plan

The Schreyer Plan is a tool to help you meet these honors requirements and plan your academic journey in partnership with your honors adviser. It asks you to map out your courses for the following year while also reflecting on the College’s mission, vision, and values.

Each year, you will submit your Schreyer Plan through the Student Records System (SRS). After it is submitted, your plan is reviewed by your honors adviser, who either approves it or sends it back to you with comments for revisions and resubmission. Visit Academic Deadlines for Schreyer Plan due dates.

Honors Course/Credit Requirements by Schreyer Entry Year

Your honors requirements are determined by the year and semester you entered the Schreyer Honors College. You can verify your entry year in the Student Records System (SRS) in the Academics section below your ID photo. You can also view your progress towards your requirements in the SRS Honors Audit. Honors credits taken prior to formal entrance to the Schreyer Honors College are not counted toward honors requirements.

If you plan to complete your undergraduate degree in less than four years, please make an appointment with Schreyer’s Coordinator of Student Records and Advising Services to discuss honors credit and thesis expectations.

How to Determine Lower Division versus Upper Division

Lower and upper division are not related to course number. Lower division honors credits must be completed during a Scholar's first two years of Penn State enrollment. Upper division honors credits must be completed in a Scholar's final two years of Penn State enrollment.

Courses taken in the summer between the second and third years may be counted toward either the lower division or the upper division credit requirement as needed.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

The Schreyer Honors College requires you to have a GPA of at least 3.40 for both cumulative and semester GPA. If you fall below 3.40 in either your cumulative or semester GPA, you will be placed on warning during the following semester.

Penn State requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.40 at the time of graduation to graduate with honors through Schreyer Honors College.
